The sapwood is light-colored to nearly white and the heartwood varies from grayish or light brown, to pale yellow streaked with brown. The wood is generally straight-grained with a coarse uniform texture. It can be stained or painted wherein there is a strong color, but the grain of the wood still shows through. Ash is a great frame for woodcuts, linocut prints, or artwork that has a strong texture.
